    About the Book

    Edit

"Raja Ampat, The Beating Heart of the Coral Universe", is a comprehensive view of the unique marine species and environments found in the underwater realm of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Beautifully photographed and plainly written to help the reader identify and discover the behaviors of over 100 species of marine life and glimpse the vast expanses of hard and soft corals rising from the depths to form stunning rock island outcroppings with swim throughs, caves and overhangs. Also featured is a special section highlighting the environmental protections made possible through partnerships with local communities and the development of sustainable Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and enforcement. This book is essential reading for those preparing for a dive trip to Raja Ampat and for those returning who want a stunning keepsake to remember its beauty.

Our base for photography is always the spectacular, Dewi Nusantara Liveaboard. Simply put, she is a class unto herself. Our book documents the building of Dewi, a longtime dream of ship builder, Guido Brink whose concept lead to the construction of this mythical 180 ft. ironwood schooner. Born on the remote banks of Kalimantan, in Indonesian Borneo, she was hand built using traditional tools by expert shipwrights and craftsmen. It is a fascinating story and one we hope will leave you wanting to join a future cruise.

After becoming certified divers in 2000, Elissa and Jody Thompson became increasingly interested in exploring different cultures and unique underwater environments. Their travels have taken them to some of the most unique and ecologically rich places in the world including, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania, Maldives, Palau, Jamaica, Mexico, Honduras, Honduras, the Bahamas and their own backyard the California coast. Their passion for underwater exploration, marine biodiversity and underwater photography has been translated into a new series of dive travel and species Identification books. Written and photographed for recreational divers and those who want to know more about the location and species they see, these books bring to life the richness of our fragile marine communities.
