    About the Book

    Edit

Among the water mites parasitizing freshwater lampsilinine mussels (Unionidae: Ambeminae: Lampsilini) is a group of large and distinctive mites that heretofore have been treated as a single species, Unionicola hoesei Vidrine 1986. This taxonomic group is now considered to be polyphyletic as a result of DNA sequencing. This book presents photomicrographs of a variety of the mites in this group. Discussions of the history of the subgenus Unionicolides, patterns of host associations, and conservation biology are some of the distinctive features of this volume. An appendix listing the freshwater mussels of Louisiana is provided.
