    About the Book

    Edit

Matisse and the Rustle of Wings is not about me looking for a dog—but how a dog with an angelic sidekick went about looking for me. Out of the blue I heard, “Look for a dog in the newspaper.” Huh? Not me! I blew it off. For sure, I knew there was nary an angelic Rolodex with my name in it, so why me? Indeed. Unbeknownst to me at the time–I was being tapped for a rescue mission. This particular angel had a little warrior in his care, one of the ones in desperate need. But that’s not all of the story. Angels remind us, “Be not blind of the beautiful moments and opportunities in your life that have shown up.” So, along with the rescue of Matisse and among the promises of beautiful moments was the creation of my ‘accidental garden’ (the one Matisse so loved and my love letter to the ‘shining ones’ the Devas of Mother Earth)—out on the mesa of New Mexico where I had to leave it.

    Amarillo, Texas

I was born in South Texas and grew up on a cotton farm in the 1950s. I owe the privilege of growing up in Texas to the stalwart spirit of my great-grandparents Tomas and Veronika Fojt who in 1870 were among Texas’ first pioneers. They came with a hearty constitution, grit, perseverance, bravery and a spirit forged by love of land and freedom. As Czech immigrants they settled the Texas blacklands as farmers and blacksmiths. Unfortunately, 140 years passed before I became aware of the depth of gratitude owed them; and conversely–due largely to ignorance of their existence–had likewise been denied. After searching, I finally found the remains of their intrepid spirit on the Texas prairie–etched in stone and muted in the silence of a foreign language that as a 4th generation Texas Czech, I had long forgotten. In their memory, I published Strangers at the Gate in 2013 to honor and give thanks for their fortuitous ancestral passage to this extraordinary place called Texas.
