    About the Book

    Edit

This book began when I was fourteen years old with my first camera. It was a Kodak Brownie and I built a small darkroom in the basement. My first published news pictures were in 1952 of then Senator Richard Nixon campaigning on the Eisenhower, GOP ticket, whistle stopping through Ohio. After High School I went to Ohio University and majored in photojournalism. My career began as an assistant to Ms. Nina Leen at LIFE Magazine in New York City in 1957. In 1958 I was drafted into the US Army for two years, after which I went on a scientific research expedition aboard a sailing schooner for a year. All this effort furthered my experience in photojournalism. When I returned from the expedition I got a real job at the Cincinnati Post Times Star newspaper in Cincinnati, Ohio for five years. This gave me a good foundation in daily news coverage. When I left Cincinnati, I moved to Washington, D.C., where I had the good fortune to be hired at the Washington Evening Star newspaper. This experience was from May, 1965 to August, 1970. I covered spot news, sports, politics, The White House, special events, demonstrations, fashions, Voter Rights in Selma, Alabama in 1966, and the D.C. Riots in 1968. Leaving the newspaper wasn't an easy decision, but once made, proved to be a good one. I ended up at The White House. Interestingly Richard Nixon was President and had been the catalyst that had propelled me into a career in photography. It was during this period that I was able to travel extensively world wide with the President, including the first trip of President Nixon to China in 1972. This was a trip of a life time for me and especially for a photographer. At the end of three years I left this opportunity to go to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the Director of Photography. I retired from USDA in 1994. This book embodies the images from the past sixty years as a photographer, including my recent efforts in nature and landscape photography.
