    About the Book

    Edit

"The Face Of Hollywood" is a photographic portrait of the street people found in the Hollywood of 1976. A true time capsule of a bygone era. It was initiated as a class assignment while photographer Kurt Abraham attended Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. What started out as a simple class assignment developed into a full blown photojournalistic essay.

Nowhere else on the planet does there seem to be such a concentration of frustrated wannabes on just a couple of streets. Seemingly, every waiter is an actor. Every store clerk is a musician. Every shop keeper has a script to peddle. Every fashion model has a secret life as a stripper or in porn.

They walk the streets displaying their various talents and gimmicks - waiting to be discovered by some studio executive driving by. Occasionally a real celebrity would walk by giving them a sense of renewed hope. On the streets of Hollywood, everyone wants to be a star.

But then there are those who have simply given up on life entirely. The homeless. The insane. They live day to day moving their grocery bags and shopping carts from one street corner to another.

This is the story of all of these people.

Kurt Abraham was born in McKeesport, PA in 1952 and always dreamt of escaping the small town to work in films and photography in Hollywood. In 1974, he made his dream come true and was accepted into Art Center College of Design based upon a portfolio of 12 photos. Kurt attended ACCD in Los Angeles / Pasadena from 1974 to 1977. After leaving ACCD, Kurt worked as a professional photographer in the fashion, advertising, magazine and record industries in Los Angeles and then in New York City. In 1981, Kurt started an adult greeting card company called "Brazen Images, Inc" which specialized in erotic and naughty sexual images offset by humorous gag lines. Kurt closed that company in 2006. It ran exactly 25 years. In 2003, Kurt started a website called "Naughty Nostalgia" which is devoted to the restoration and preservation of vintage 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm stag films from the 1900's to the 1980's .
