    About the Book

    Edit

This visual tour of of the legacies of the Incan Empire includes the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu nestled on a mountain saddle high above the Urubamba river that was rediscovered by Yale professor Hiram Bingham in 1911; the walled Sacsayhuaman Archeological Complex with its massive interlocking limestone blocks; the high altitude Sacred Lake Titicaca where, according to a legend, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo appeared from its depths and the Incan civilization was born; and Cusco, the puma-shaped capital of the Incan Empire and home of the Coricancha which the Spanish destroyed and built the Church of Santo Domingo on its ruined foundations, and the Jesuit Church of La Compañia de Jesus and the magnificent Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas. The tour also gives an aerial view of the mysterious Nazca lines and geoglyths consisting of simple lines and trapezoids to stylized hummingbirds, condors, parrots, spiders, monkeys, dogs, trees and lizards. Are they a map of underground waterways, a landing strip for aliens, or an ancient astronomical calendar? In addition, the tour visits the rugged Ballestas islands, home to millions of birds including Humboldt penguin, cormorants, boobies and pelicans, as well as sea lions. Finally, the tour provides a view of the city of Lima, founded in 1535 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro and now the current capital of Peru and the oasis town of Ica founded in 1563 by Spanish conquistador Gerónimo Luis de Cabrera.
