    About the Book

    Edit

The Festiniog Railway opened in 1833, and was a pioneer of steam technology. The George England locomotives were the first truly successful steam locomotives on a narrow gauge railway. This is the fascinating story of the development of the locomotives, and their use on the railway.

It covers the many changes that the locomotives went through over the last 150 year: how they were adapted to the needs of a flourishing slate railway; how some of them survived the downturn in fortunes between the wars; and how they were revived and restored after preservation. The book tells the story of the individual locomotives, their place on the railway and the people behind them.

Read about how George England won the contract to build the Festiniog's first locomotives. How he fell out with Robert Fairlie, sued him over Fairlie's elopement with his 17 year old daughter, then made Fairlie the successor of his manufacturing company. Read the inspiring tale of how the Palmerston was transformed from a rusted hulk sold to a traction engine society in Staffordshire back into a working locomotive on the railway.

These, and other, stories await you.

The book contains many previously unpublished photographs, as well as high resolution reproductions of some familiar images. It gives the most detailed histories of the locomotives available anywhere.
