    About the Book

    Edit

This is a journey into landscape, into the deep heart of a place where the river is as wide as a sea, where skies are vast and time seems to stand still.

Film-maker and photographer Gillian McIver travelled to the remote region of the Upper Volga, Russia. Her search for the spirit of the landscape, the spiritual heart that infuses the work of the great Russian film-maker Andrey Tarkovsky, is documented here. The journey goes upriver, along the mighty Volga to the small town of Yureyvets, where Tarkovsky spent his childhood. It is about a journey into memory, not a personal memory but a collective one, holding within it a sense of the interconnectedness of man and the natural world. Remote in a vast natural landscape, the town appears frozen in a post-Soviet stasis, aching with beauty yet falling apart. Tarkovsky's River is part dreamscape, part documentary, part meditation on the nature of the relationship between landscape and camera.

Tarkovsky's River is a limited edition (100 copies only) book of photography and text.
