    INCIDENT IN THE OREGON DESERT

(based on true life experiences) Location: the High Oregon Desert, near Twin Springs.

I loved living in the desert. I had been a farm boy. I grew up on the farm. There was nothing on a farm I had not done. My family had milk cows. I had milked my own eight to ten cows by hand night and morning even when I was ten to twelve years old. So, I felt right at home in Nyssa. Also, many of the families in our church had riding horses, as we did. We had two horses. My wife was a horseback rider. My daughter was born on horseback, it seemed. Often, when we go to a new church, people say that they have to provide pasture and a pastorate for the new pastor.

After moving here, my wife and daughter began taking long rides into the desert. Much of the time, they would camp overnight. I had slept at night in a sleeping bag looking up at the stars. It seemed you could reach up and touch the stars.

It was the Thanksgiving weekend of 1974. My wife, Carolyn; my daughter, Dawn; my son, Randall; and some friends had gone into the desert on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. They took enough supplies to stay out for the whole weekend. When they left, we decided they would return by dark or by 10:00 p.m. on the Sunday night after Thanksgiving. They did not return. I had gone to search for them. I left Nyssa at about midnight in a borrowed pickup . . .

Some experiences are 'stranger than fiction'. My book, Incident In The Oregon Desert tells a story that is an experience like this.

It left me shaking my head and wondering if I had a dream or did the events of the eighteen hours of incredible events and happenings really take place. Meeting Ken Worth at two o'clock in the morning changed me. I am not the same person I was before meeting him. And our meeting changed Ken. He was changed and I was changed.

As you read this fictionalized true story; you will learn the secret of why we were changed by, "Incident In The Oregon Desert."

I wrote the story for my brother, “Wally.” Now, I especially dedicate this ‘telling’ of the story to him.

    Robert (Bob) S. Hutchinson

Born in 1932 in Kelso, WA. A farm boy, one of 13 siblings, I became a Christian at about 10 years of age. With a Bachelor's in Biblical Studies, I became a Pastor in 1958 in Eureka, MT. Then in Glendale, OR, at the Assembly of God Church, then at North Howell Community Church, at Nyssa United Methodist Church, and at Brooks Hill Free Methodist Church. Received a Bachelor's in Education in 1968, taught at St. Paul Elementary and McLaren in Woodburn, OR, and as a substitute teacher. Served as a Nursing Home Administrator for five years. I reside with my wife Lois in Newberg, OR. We have four children and seven grandchildren between the two of us. I have always been a storyteller. Students in schools where I was a substitute teacher would ask me to tell them a story. I had many stories of things I had done, people I had known, places I had gone, or stories I had been told when I was a child. My first two books are: 1. Incident In The Oregon Desert 2. The Hutchinson Story
