About the Book
Berlin, a city with a history that looks back through many periods that have left their marks. Choosing walks that reflect different cultural eras, I reflected on how they overlap and co-exist – the echoes of aristocratic tradition, the communist
east and the hope that appears in its
progressive social movements of the past forty years.
With my usual penchanty for odd subtexts, the Rote Saal in the Neues Museum spoke to me about ancient roots, a desire to anchor one’s culture deep in a past. Possibly these are echoes which continue to have a hold on us in the present, whatever our city or heritage. Perhaps they are stories we tell ourselves to protect our traditions.
