About the Book
I grew up in Châu Đốc, a small town in southwestern Vietnam, and lived there until my family immigrated to the United States in 1981. I have been returning to visit often but the town has changed almost completely since my childhood. The street where I lived no longer seems recognizable; even its name was changed this year. The Châu Đốc district, which includes the town, is on the border where the Mekong River enters Vietnam from Cambodia. The area has a diverse population of Vietnamese, Khmer, Chinese, and Chăm Muslims. Economy is based on agriculture, fish farming, and border trade. There are two seasons, monsoon and dry. The climate is typical of South Vietnam - tropical, hot and humid. The photographs in this book were made on a visit in 2011 - they are sentiments of my hometown.
