    About the Book

Volume 6 of the Honeycomb Project highlights the contributions of many participants working at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. Members of Mills Station Arts and Culture Center in Rancho Cordova, California also contributed to this volume. The final Honeycomb Workshop was held in Boulder, Colorado on August 30th and printmakers attending the Water symposium collaged their prints, adding to the community hive. Individual artists living in Nevada and Utah also created panels shown in this catalog.

As the organizer of this project, I’ve been enriched by the extraordinary experiences and insights gained along the way. Reflecting on the honeycomb metaphor, I’ve come to a fascinating realization: the majority of bee species are solitary, with approximately 90 percent of the estimated 20,000 bee species worldwide living alone. This fact is intriguing, as our common perception of bees is heavily influenced by social species like honeybees and bumblebees. I, too, was unaware of this distinction, but it resonates deeply with the unfolding narrative of this project. Observing the artists who eagerly joined has been enlightening, as has witnessing those who chose not to participate or who eventually dropped out. This small yet impactful project has grown significantly, and as I near the completion of this volume, I am excited to share that around 900 panels are now packed and ready for display, with a total of 500 participants in 14 states.

As an artist, Candace Nicol Garlock uses an array of mediums in her work. The coalescence of printmaking techniques, painting, photography (and sculpture, too!) overlap and converge with color, texture and line in a collaboration of mixed, experimental beauty. With her appreciation of the interconnectedness of everything, she explores relationships: human and environment, human and animal, human and human.
