The American Landscape 2025
The iconography of the American suburban house is instantly recognizable and can communicate this culture both subtly and overtly. But what does the image of a typical suburban house convey? The house as a symbol of perfection also obliterates and denies the reality of the lives that inhabit that space - Lives that are not always perfect, lives that are not traditional, lives that fall apart, or change radically.

Through this series of images, Mr Parnas is exploring his own relationship with the suburbs, his sense of nostalgia, disillusionment, regret, and erasure of history (his and others). The physical environment of the suburban neighborhood enforces a sense of privacy and protection. Residents are rarely seen; the street is the dominant connection. The act of photographing the house borders on voyeurism - it begins to violate this privacy - And yet, it asks questions: Who is there? What is missing? What do we not see?
