About the Book
The photographs in this photo book showcase various homes in the city of Stockton that fit the stereotype of the American Dream. A dream of happiness, success, and comfort. These homes consist of large Georgian Colonials with black window shutters, large columns, and wood or brick siding. All of these homes are complemented by beautiful landscaping that invites guests to approach the front door. In contrast, the photographs also reveal the homeless crisis that plagues our city. While residents enjoy comfortable living, we have neighbors living in tent cities that our homeless population call “home.” I hope to provide awareness about the homeless population to our residents. Growing up in Stockton, I have been very aware of this issue and have witnessed it all my life, which is what inspired me to create this series. I hope that people can understand the harsh realities of our city and empathize with those who are impacted. These photos were shot in a documentative street photography style. This consists of me roaming around the streets of Stockton to find subjects for this series. I decided to have the homeless pictures in black and white and the pictures of wealthy neighborhoods in color. These decisions contribute to the sorrowful tone that should be recognized by the people of Stockton.
