    Het beroemdste door Congo geïnspireerde literaire werk is ongetwijfeld 'Heart of Darkness' van Joseph Conrad (1857-1924). De Poolse zeeman-auteur schreef de roman nadat hij zelf in 1890 ternauwernood enkele maanden in “ het hart der duisternis” had overleefd. Heel wat minder bekend is het vroegere 'An Outpost of Progress', dat een vernietigende kijk geeft op de gang van zaken in de privékolonie van koning Leopold II, of woke in de 19de eeuw. Het kortverhaal wordt hier gebracht in Nederlandse vertaling, samen met het Congo Dagboek, bij de honderdste verjaardag van Joseph Conrads overlijden op 3 augustus 1924.
