About the Book
She was born in Tennessee the daughter and granddaughter of famous Morgan military men who were also successful businessmen who spawned many children; she was also the granddaughter of a Cherokee woman who married Joseph Sevier (originally Xavier, and descended from one of the first saints of the Catholic Church), which makes her descendants the children of Cherokees as well as of the first governor of Tennessee John Sevier — a notorious fighter who destroyed indigenous peoples’ culture and drove them from their land for immigrants. Is our family conflicted? You bet we are!

At 17 I became editor of several weekly newspapers in Northern California, graduated from UO in journalism, married, a reporter in Eastern Oregon, and then taught award-winning journalism students for more than 31 years. When I was 19 a great-aunt passed along our family history, researched and written by my great-grandfather John Edgar McElrath. I bring family history to life.
