About the Book
imagining Mexico. It has been such a visual presence, a reminder of injustice and ongoing tragedy. But when actually visiting Mexico, other walls take the attention.
Colour is everywhere – vibrant – intense.
These walls are expressive of life and emotion, matching the lushness of the climate. Maybe the hot sun calls for such saturation, but these are not the pastels of the Mediterranian and certainly not the sombre colours of the north. In walking these streets I am amazed how, whether it is archtectural design or hasty graffiti on the metal awning of a closed shop, there is light and chroma everywhere. This city is alive with people and activity. It seems to go on forever. And these walls put to shame that other one along a border.
