    About the Book

    Edit

Anecdotes about near-death experiences often generate curiosity, firstly, the twists and turns of the events that ensued, secondly, the life-changing effects that have brought to bear on the lives of those who had such experiences, and lastly, the authenticity of the account. The best-selling accounts on near-death experiences were laden with stories, anecdotes, and graphic descriptions, none of which can be explained or substantiated convincingly. A resurgence of interest in the subject of near death experiences began in 1975 when Raymond Mood published a collection of accounts of near-death experiences in a seminal book entitled “Life After Life”. Writings on this subject of near-death experiences were found to date back to ancient Egyptian and Greek civilizations. This subject caught the fancy of academic researchers who are trained in the areas of psychology, neurology, physiology and pharmacology. Hot on the heels of momentum to uncover the causes of near death experiences and the veracity of such experiences, a proliferation of academic research ensued. Despite the best attempts made to substantiate the cause of near-death experiences by leaning on empirically supported hypotheses, these researches yielded conclusions that are at best, a priori reasoning. The other approach to making sense of near-death experiences and the effects they have on the lives of those who had such experiences were based on responses made to structured interview techniques. The interview method produced findings and uncovered revelations that only reaffirm the well-documented common features that events bring to life momentarily and the positive life changing effects that these events exert on those who experience them. Death is a topic that engenders fear and evokes trepidation for the uncertainty that ensues. Near-death experiences for those who had savoured them in a contemporary setting, have transformed a great majority of them into positivists who embrace life with vigour.
