    About the Book

    Edit

In the spring of 1861, the French photographer Claude-Marie Ferrier acquired a Dallmeyer binocular camera. With it he took over 100 glass stereoviews of Paris. These were not sentimental photographs of old medieval Paris, but the Paris of the emperor Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann. It was a modern, efficient, prosperous, and beautiful city . . . a city of light and energy. Unlike Ferrier’s earlier views of Paris that were taken early in the morning when streets were empty, his new camera allowed him to make instantaneous views, 3-D snapshots of people on the city’s new boulevards, bridges, and squares as they moved to the rhythm of their lives on foot and in carriages, wagons, and omnibuses. 194 pages, 101 illustrations, including 50 instantaneous glass stereoviews of Paris.
