This story is about a young Native American boy named Kinap who is the only son of a tribal leader. A late summer storm separates Kinap from his family and tribe members, leaving his island home unrecognizable. Whit his family scattered and feared lost to the storm, Kinap spends weeks searching the other island for them. During this time, he realizes that is no longer a boy, but becoming a man who must learn how to survive on his own. As summer nears its end, and as the days grow shorter and colder, Kinap realizes he must begin preparing for the long winter months ahead. Alone, and away from his family, he starts to build a new life, but he never gives up hope on finding his family.
