    About the Book

    Edit

German artist Thomas Zika is working with the medium of photography in a very experimental approach. Within the scope of his project "complete persons" he shows fictious portraits, which are not photographs shot with a camera, but derive from huge self-drawn negative film sheets coloured with translucent albumen pigments. He creates his psychic friends by folding collages from female and male models printed in fashion advertisings. For his pictorial transfers on acetate film he works with colours formerly used to retouch aesthetical and technical mistakes on analogue photo prints and negatives. The result is a disturbing visual fantasy about the failed or forced or neccessary integration of the anima- and animus-archetypes into a person.

    Thomas Zika
    Germany

Germany-based artist Thomas Zika is working with photography. He is interested in the blind spots that are embedded in all our senses and tries to create oscillation figures to reflect upon the mechanisms of our perception. His artistic research, his books and projects are based on conceptual and experimental strategies of finding and developping specific photographic approaches. Thomas Zika: for me the term placebo has always been an excellent metaphor for human’s relationship to images as well as for the relation of images to the real world. Our visual perception is organised around an invisible center – the blind spot. It is this blind spot that I am interested in: epistemologically, visually, intellectually, and spiritually. Often the starting point for me is a personal biographical question which gets me running as an artist. I try to create symbolic balances of "Eros and Thanatos".
