    About the Book

    Edit

From the Victorian photographer beneath his black cloth to the 21st century 'snapper' with a selfie stick, photographers have probably always appeared a little eccentric to the casual observer.
This is what I wanted to try and capture when I first started documenting my fellow photographers in 2007. I soon found that the photographers' subjects were just as interesting. Most people with a camera pointed at them put on their ‘photograph face’, the image of themselves that they want to present to the world.
The first smartphones became available in about 2008 and the advent of good quality front-facing cameras, coupled with the rise of social media, ushered in the age of the selfie. This added a whole new dimension to my collection.
It may be that, in my pictures, I am gently poking fun at my subjects but I always remind myself that I am like them - another 'snapper'. So, in a way, I am laughing at myself!
This book is dedicated to all 'snappers' for whatever reason they take their photographs. For me it is an urge to document the world around me, to record the everyday moments we often take for granted. In the ordinary, I like to find the extraordinary.

    Robin Weaver
    Ashbourne, Derbyshire, UK

For 25 years I worked as a photographer on various provincial newspapers – first in South Wales during the 1970s, followed by stints in Kent, Hampshire and Derby. While living in Sydney during a two-year travelling break, I worked as a freelance for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian. In the 1990s I started freelancing in Derby and started taking my photography in a different direction, doing travel articles with my wife, the writer Helen Werin, and selling landscape and travel photographs to magazines and newspapers. I retired in 2019 and continue to travel and work on my personal photography projects. After 40 years in my files, my old photographs from South Wales in the 1970s have gained a new lease of life with the publication of my book A Different Country. The book continues to sell well and the images are also popular as prints which are available through my website.
